Major Ice Storm hits Camp High Rocks

Friday, February 12th, 2010

birdhouse2Winter has hit us once again!  The snow that usually melts after twenty-four hours, has still been here since December!  Most of that has been on the north facing slopes, but there is still a lot of snow on the trails too.  Each time the snow begins to melt, we get a little more.  It’s really been quite a winter wonderland this year!

This past week, we got hit with a little snow, but also a good bit of ice.  We lost a good number of limbs and a couple trees, and power for a bit. The beauty of the event is that all of the buildings were spared!   We just have a ton of debris to clean up.

The one cool part is that Hank took some great pictures.  It’s amazing how neat some things are when you look at it from a different angle.  The ice storm is definitely not an event you wish for, but it can be beautiful too!   All the mess should be cleaned up and ready to go come April!!!  I can’t wait for summer to get here!

Enjoy the photos!

Team High Rocks: Ben, Zoob, Woody, Crystal, Don, Hank, Townsend!

This past Wednesday, several Brevard, North Carolina summer camps got together for some friendly bowling.  Over the last few winters it has just been Camp Illahee and Camp High Rocks competing for the “Cup.”

The Cup is a sweet “made from old parts” trophy created by Hank Birdsong several years ago.  Over the last few years, the trophy has changed hands back and forth between Illahee and High Rocks.  Camp Illahee opened the competition field and invited several area camps to come out and play with us this year. The turnout included members from Keystone Camp, Camp High Rocks, Camp Illahee, and Rockbrook Camp

The fun included not only bowling, but deep fried food product, local flavor, and Karaoke! Yes, Karaoke!  We only had two takers for the Karaoke, including Megan, from Keystone, and High Rocks camper, Turner Strayhorn!

In the end, Camp High Rocks took home “The Cup.” Winning the cup, unfortunately, means that High Rocks has to organize the event for next year.   Thanks to Camp Illahee for organizing this year.  We all had a lot of fun!!!
