Opening Day!!!

Pictures from June 6, 2010 (password protected)

We couldn’t have asked for better weather today. Blue skies were intermixed with bright clouds, a nice breeze was blowing all day, and sounds of excitement permeated the air! The campers have already visited each of the activity areas during the day and picked their activities tonight.

Most of today’s pictures are from this afternoon.  We will normally post pictures by 9pm, but circumstances may occasionally delay us until later.

Monday will be the first full day of activities. I will try to send your initial letter from camp on Monday or Tuesday. In the letter I will have your son’s schedule and will tell you a bit about his counselor. At this session we have 115 campers and 68 staff members. Most of our staff are returning counselors or former High Rocks campers (59 of the 68 staff members). If you haven’t had a chance to look over our wonderful staff yet, be sure to look over our 2010 summer staff page.

As we add to the blog throughout the session we might refer to evening age group activities. Just so you know where your son’s cabin fits in, here are how the age groups line up (youngest to oldest):

“Juniors”- (Hillside & Connestee)
“Middler 1”- (Lakeside & Foxhollow)
“Middler 2” – (Flattop, Holiday & Chalet)
“Upper Middlers” – (Windswept & Outpost)
“Seniors” – (Halfway)
“Upper Seniors” – (Lookout)

Please remember not to send packages of any sort. Packages will not be delivered to campers (if there is a birthday, call us for instructions). If you need to send a forgotten item of clothing, medication, etc, call our office first & then send the item to the attention of our office staff. Our office staff will open the package & deliver the item.

Enjoy the pictures- we will try to post by 9pm each day, but it can be much later, or even the next day. Sometimes the pictures are from the previous day, sometimes they are from earlier in the same day.

We’re looking forward to a great session. Be sure to visit often to check out pictures as the session progresses.

Take care,

Hank Birdsong
Camp Director

Let The Summer Begin!!!

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

IMG_1851Finally, after 8 months of anticipation, summer camp begins tomorrow!!!  We are so excited to reunite and meet new campers this summer.  We have done so much to prepare for this day, it’s plain crazy!

There are many new and exciting things happening at camp this year.  Some are completely new and some are old things, but better!   If you remember an earlier post about the Rockit, you know about the fun stuff happening in swimming, but we also but down a brand new deck on the dock.   Don’t forget about the finished bouldering cave, with hundreds of square feet of climbing wall space!  The game room next door is also new, with ping pong and foosball tables.  We have also revamped the craft and pottery spaces.

Some of you will also notice that our 5pm “freetime” will have a number of new “choice” activities to choose from including lacrosse (bring your sticks if you want), our new designed disc golf course, field games, and rocketry. Some of the other improvements you will see on opening day and throughout the session!

We have spent the last two full weeks training and orienting our staff.  Of course, we focused on coming together as a team, but we also focused on how to teach the skills in the activity, how to be a great counselor, and tips on working with kids.  With over 85% of our staff returning from a previous season, we are looking forward to an amazing program!  Click here for a few highlight pictures from our staff orientation.  Our staff is so excited about tomorrow!

A few notes for parents.  We will have a link each day from this blog to the daily pictures.  This is where you will need your 2010 password that is in the parent guide, and also given to you on opening day to get you into the picture gallery.  Hank and Don will post daily news and helpful information as we progress through the session.  As always, if you need anything, just let us know.

See you tomorrow!
