What a great day! Our boys are in such a groove right now. I enjoy seeing the boys making their own adventures as they head to their activities. The boys loop back together during meals and rest hour to share their stories. Most of the boys remember their masks for the dining hall, but usually, it is just a quick trip back to the cabin. While you never really want it to rain at camp, it is just another part of the adventure. We needed a little rain, and it didn’t slow us down a bit. The showers were intermittent and the boys had a blast.
Some of the boys are starting to use their skills to head out on adventures. the hiking guys took some of age group 5 on an all-day hike up to Black Balsam in Pisgah today.
We also had two different canoeing trips down the French Broad right here in Brevard. A great moving flatwater section to learn new skills that will take them to the next step. Our paddling program always starts out in canoes and is always on flat water. The canoe gives the boys a good vantage point for when they first hit the river and it gives them a bigger craft that is not as edgy as a solo canoe or kayak. It is a tried and tested tradition in these parts that go back for over a hundred years. The boys will learn both the bow and stern positions on the lake and on the river. All of their strokes and maneuvers are designed to take them down the whitewater river progression. Once the boys have moved up to the second or third rivers in the canoeing progression, they can move into a solo boat like a kayak, C-1, or OC-1 (solo canoe). They will continue their progression in the canoe and the solo craft. Year after year these boys are challenged on new rivers with new skills. It is still one of our most popular activities. These boys in the two-week session are just starting along that progression that can eventually take them to Class II and IV white water a few years down the road.
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, homefries, cream of wheat, blueberry bread, assorted fruit, and assorted cereals
Lunch: Taco Tuesday! Soft tortillas and/or corn chips, black beans and/or ground beef, lettuce tomato, onion, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, lime, fresh cilantro, and even diced jalapenos. Tossed Salad if you needed it.
Dinner: Scratch-Made Chicken Pot Pie, mashed taters, asparagus, rolls, salad, and chocolate cake.
This really is a great time in the session to see the rewards the boys have gained in their activities. I am really impressed with the skills these boys have picked up. Paddling a canoe is no small feat. Not only do you have to figure out how all this paddle, boat, and buoyancy work together, but you also need to learn to communicate and work with another person! It is truly an art and science wrapped into one. I enjoy watching these guys put it all together, and look good doing it!
