Staff Hiring Trip to the UK

Recently Don, Zoob, and I were fortunate enough to head to the UK on a mission to hire some British staff members for the upcoming summer. It was our first time participating in a series of staffing fairs organized by Camp America and, as you can imagine, we were quite excited at the prospect of hiring cool counselors while abroad! We arrived in London before the first fair with some time to adjust to the time zone and weather. This of course also allowed us to enjoy some sights before getting down to business.

Don and Zoob went full English by attending an Arsenal football match, having spent some time beforehand learning the appropriate cheers and songs that would be expected of a proper Arsenal fan. We also got to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, walked the Thames by the Tower and Parliament, and enjoyed foods not found in Brevard!

At the London fair, our very own Dom Curry joined us for a fun day of interviewing and talking camp with many excited applicants. Then it was a quick turnaround and flight to Glasgow for a fair the next day.

In Scotland, we again were lucky enough to have two returning High Rocks staff members lend us some local cred. Vincent Purcell and Luke Baird spent the afternoon talking up camp before taking us out for a very authentic Sunday roast dinner served in a cozy pub. With the sun setting so early and a cold rain falling, it was a warm evening spent laughing with some far-flung friends.

Not to appear too hasty in departing the country once business was complete, we extended our stay by a couple of days to take in the sights both in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. After somehow dodging a rather violent storm that shut much of the country down just before our arrival, we were instead treated to a few days of sunny and (relatively) warm weather to fully engage our tourist side. We had high tea at the Balmoral, explored the Edinburgh castle, and visited cathedrals older than our country by a good bit. We also did an underground tour of historic conditions in Edinburgh in the 1600s… it made our cabins look downright luxurious!

Before we knew it, it was time to hop back on the plane and head home to NC. We are excited for both the new and familiar faces we get to see at camp soon!
