Springtime Reflections

Springtime is an exciting time for folks in the summer camp community. It won’t be long now until camp is filled with staff ready for staff training. Then after that, our first Opening Day will be here and life at camp will be bustling with activity. The springtime is a period of time at camp where things are slowly ramping up. Before the summer is in full swing, it can be helpful to reflect on last summer and set intentions for the upcoming summer. Our year-round crew has taken some time to do just that! Let’s hear what they had to say…

What is something you are looking forward to this summer?

  • Welcoming everyone back from last summer and sharing this experience with all first timers! – Townsend Birdsong
  • Warm days on cool rivers! – Andy Glas
  • Seeing all the incredible returning staff back in action, and camp food, and Ada May (A camp dog). – Benjamin Birdsong
  • I look forward to introducing our first year campers and families to High Rocks. It is such a special experience to be a first timer and join this wonderful community. – Darby Dame
  • I always get excited about a new summer! It is a wonderful sight to watch the community come together. – Don Gentle

What did you learn last summer that you are taking forward into this summer?

  • The cultural impacts of the many impromptu tournaments (i.e. disc golf) and the positive ripples they had. Looking forward to those repeating and adding new ones in. – Woody Noland
  • Many hands make light work – while it isn’t new (or my) saying, at camp it couldn’t be more true. Using the resources and support we have allows for the best camp program. – Darby Dame
  • I learned that High Rocks is a great place to step outside of your comfort zone. People here want to support you! – Mary Boss
  • How important it is for leaders to lead with positivity. – Zoob Gentle

What is an intention or goal you have for this summer?

  • To include some more moments of reflection for our group. I’m always surprised at the capacity of our campers to think deeply amidst the fun camp bustle. – Woody Noland
  • To be as entertaining as I can be without looking like a fool!  – Mark Birdsong
  • Building strong connections with all the new staff. – Andy Glas
  • To spend more time playing with campers whether that is on the tennis courts, gaga pit, four square or a card game. – Zoob Gentle

  • Plant more visual and edible treats around camp for the boys to enjoy. – Nate Noland
  • I want the boys to feel inspired to do great things and to understand community. – Don Gentle

Reflection is a powerful tool when it comes to growth. It allows us to learn from the past, and to set intentions for the future. It is a tool that helps us on the journey of continuing to make camp the best program we can possibly make it.

As we look forward to the summer, we are excited to begin another season full of new learning and new ideas. We cannot wait to see our camp community come together once again.
