I made a point of being out in camp as much as I could tday It’s not that I don’t get out on a regular basis, but today, I made a point of being out in camp all day. I enjoyed the assembly this morning. I think everyone needs to start their day with some stretching, power squats, and then a few motion songs. Imagine how you would feel if you started every day like that.
I also helped out our new arts and crafts staff with “launch day.” The boys were working on the rockets all week. It wasn’t a perfect day for launch, but this morning’s event went really well. We were thundered out a bit this afternoon, but the rain was a welcomed change. Not to fret. The boys will make it up next week.
It was another great Saturday out there and a first Saturday for our mini boys. I really enjoyed one of High Rocks’ modern classics down at rock climbing. Crate stacking is an acrobatic feat that requires the climber to ascend and stack milk crates as he slowly adds one at a time without letting them tip over. Of course, they are on belay and roped in with plenty of guys cheering them on. It requires a lot of balance and poise. Some boys were able to get as many as 18 crates. An impressive feat.
Life at High Rocks is about being present in the moment and living. Without the distractions from electronics, politics, and the stresses we put upon our daily routine, you can get down to living. I really enjoy watching it all happen around me. We are into the “meat” of the session now. While I don’t want to be the one to shock you, it’s not always easy. For some boys, just being here is a huge step. For others, it may be going off the rope swing for the first time or getting to the top of the tower. I tell these boys time and time again to “embrace the discomfort.” That is where life is happening. The sweet spot is right at the edge of the discomfort where you feel a little uneasy, but not gripped with fear. If you don’t learn to handle the discomfort, it will all become gripping fear. Anyhow, what I am trying to say is I enjoy watching these boys face some fears, work through some frustration, and have some success. it’s about the space we create for these boys. It’s purposeful and it works. Our staff are very much in tune with the process and are there to help along the way. Check out the successes in the pictures today.
We enjoyed a little time with the girls of Keystone Camp for girls this evening. I was very impressed with the ladies that came our way this evening. Zoob and I had to split forces as she took the youngest three age groups over to Keystone and I hosted the oldest three groups here. Again, I was really impressed with the participation, manners, and kindness. Page Lemel runs a tight ship over their, and her daughter Ctherine is learning the ropes. It’s a great program to check out. We have several sisters that attend.
It sure was a blast today. I hope your night was great too.
All the best,
Don
