Our Alumni Spotlight series is back! We’re excited to highlight our alumni through the years. If you or someone you know would make a great feature, email Darby at [email protected]—we’d love to hear from you!
Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Wyatt Amacker. Wyatt first joined High Rocks as a camper in the late 2000s and later returned as a paddling staff member and cabin counselor in 2017. A Georgia Tech graduate with both a BS and MS in Aerospace Engineering, Wyatt now works locally in Greenville, SC, with GE’s Gas Power team, focusing on advanced CFD simulations to support and enhance gas turbine performance.
Check out our alumni spotlight earlier this year on Liz Walker here. Now, let’s dive into Wyatt’s story!
The People! And the food! And the lake!
There are so many that come to mind, and more keep pouring in the longer I think back. One very special one was taking my cabin stargazing on Campfire Hill – I got to show them Jupiter and Saturn through my telescope!
Don’t be afraid to share your real self – you’ll be surprised at what doors can open for you when you do. Also take canoeing!
It’s hard to put camp’s impact on this subject into words. My time at High Rocks broadened my perspective, deepened my empathy, and opened my eyes to whole new ways of looking at the world and the people in it. So many of my actions and decisions overs the years have been influenced for the better by life at camp, and I am very grateful for that.
Marrying Mary-Elizabeth (MED) Dixon in 2021!
Note from High Rocks: Mary-Elizabeth worked as our first Assistant Program Director in the summer of 2017. Her contributions to camp made this position one we couldn’t live without. We now hire a staff member to fill this roll each summer! Wyatt and Mary-Elizabeth met at camp and started dating in the fall of 2017. Many High Rocks Staff were present at the wedding, including Darby Dame who was a bridesmaid.
High Rocks pushed me to step outside my comfort zone both socially and physically. I remember being nervous about going down a new rapid or climbing a new route, but the encouragement from my friends and counselors always assured me that the attempt was worth the risk. Camp offered many opportunities to branch out, meet new people, and hear fresh ideas and perspectives.
High Rocks will always occupy a very special place in my heart. I’m so thankful to all of the staff that made my time as a camper there so memorable, and I hope that I was able to provide some of that camp magic to my cabins over the years. Camp is all about paying it forward.
Thank you, Wyatt, for reminiscing on the good times and sharing with us! We look forward to seeing you at camp often, as it is such a short drive away from Greenville!
