Arts and Crafts at High Rocks is much more than lanyard-making (though lanyards remain a popular free-time project for many campers). A wide variety of projects gives each camper, even those who aren’t as confident in their artistic faculties, a daily opportunity to be creative.
Rocketry, sketching, candle-making, and tie-dyeing represent a few of the projects and skills campers work on in the crafts program. Through these projects, campers work on an idea from inspiration through completion and build confidence by creating visible, tangible representations of their own efforts.
Arts and Crafts offers a compliment to more physical activities by giving campers a heightened sense of self-direction as well as a block of more introspective time. The sense of pride campers gain from creating something that is truly theirs, whether a candle or a rocket, is immeasurable.
And after all, what would camp be without tie-dye?
“High Rocks has exceeded our expectations in so many ways with the friendly, highly-skilled staff, the personalized reports from counselors, the fabulous updates and photos posted online throughout camp, and, most importantly, the positive experience for our son.”
