High Rocks Alumni Spotlight: Jack McCallie

Welcome to our Alumni Spotlight Series! We’re excited to highlight our alumni through the years. If you or someone you know would make a great feature, email Darby at [email protected]—we’d love to hear from you!

We are thrilled to introduce you all to Jack McCallie, a former High Rocks Camper and Staff member! Jack was a camper in 1969, 1971, 1972, and 1973. He was an Assistant Counselor in 1974, and a Counselor Trainee in 1975. Jack then went on to be a Counselor in 1976, 1978, and 1980. Jack currently works as a Physician, practicing Internal Medicine in Chattanooga, TN. Let’s hear what Jack has to say about his time at High Rocks…

What do you miss most about camp?

The place and the people!

What is one of your favorite Camp High Rocks memories?

Too many to recollect but 1974 (50 years ago) was the penultimate summer for an almost 17 year old with early responsibility, lots of hikes and paddle trips and personal growth.

What advice would you give an incoming staff or camper?

Be happy….some day you’ll treasure the memories.

How has your time at Camp High Rocks impacted choices you have made in your life?

It has helped me to be an individual in a time of growing up where that was important. It’s helped develop my love for and comfort in the great outdoors which I enjoy still (and raised a family to enjoy). Camping in an old Airstream is more comfortable than a turned up canoe on the banks of the Green River, or under a tarp in the wet Plott Balsams, or under the cedar shakes of Cantrell Creek Lodge…..but it’s all the same peace.

What are one or two of your proudest moments post camp that your time at High Rocks played a role in?

I learned responsibility in trip planning and packing for hikes and canoe trips…as camper and staff. I felt the same pride nearly 50 years later still packing/planning outdoor camping trips for 45 plus family members including reservations, food, gear, and delegation of responsibilities with enough success that they kept coming back year after year!

How did camp make you be brave?

Not brave, just mature… and confident in my own abilities

Thank you to Jack McCallie for sharing your reflections on your many years as a High Rocks camper and counselor! We greatly appreciate your continued support of Camp High Rocks and our mission.
